The Dubai Sessions (2024)
The Dubai Sessions is a classical Arabic album arranged, performed, recorded, and produced by myself and my cousin, Danny Khouri. The album was completed over a few days during a visit to my cousin in late July, 2024.
The tracklist consists of simple arrangements of modern and traditional Arab classical music, such as Fairouz’s Saalouni el Nas and Foug el Nakhal, while the original tracks include the opening Intro in Bayati and the Takassims (improvised solos) performed by Danny on oud and buzuq. Samai Nahawand comprises the second half of the album, testing the listener by switching between 10/4 and 6/8 time signature grooves.
Most tracks were recorded in one take, with layers of percussion and bass guitar added afterwards. Mixing and mastering efforts were minimal; beyond level balancing and panning, we did not apply any effects such as EQ, reverb, or delay, since we wanted the record to preserve the personal, homey atmosphere of the room we recorded it in (pictured on the album cover). We were also constrained by both time and lack of experience with effect plugins. We were satisfied with the final result, and were excited to share it with friends and family.
I may revisit this album for a remaster, so stayed tuned!
